Reflection and transmission of solar light by clouds: asymptotic theory

چکیده
The authors introduce a radiative transfer model CLOUD for reflection, transmission, and absorption characteristics of terrestrial clouds and discuss the accuracy of the approximations used within the model. A Fortran implementation of CLOUD is available for download. This model is fast, accurate, and capable of calculating multiple radiative characteristics of cloudy media including the spherical and plane albedo, reflection and transmission functions, absorptance as well as global and diffuse transmittance. The approximations are based on the asymptotic solutions of the radiative transfer equations valid at cloud optical thicknesses larger than 5. While the analytic part of the solutions is treated in the code in an approximate way, the correspondent reflection function (RF) of a semi-infinite water cloud R∞ is calculated using numerical solutions of the radiative transfer equation in the assumption of Deirmendjian’s cloud C1 model. In the case of ice clouds, the fractal ice crystal model is used. The resulting values of R∞ with respect to the viewing geometry are stored in a look-up table (LUT). The results obtained are of importance for quick estimations of main radiative characteristics of clouds and also for the solution of inverse problems.

Determination of the Scaled Optical Thickness of Clouds from Reflected Solar Radiation Measurements
A method is presented for determining the scaled optical thickness of clouds from reflected solar radiation measurements. The procedure compares measurements of the reflection function with asymptotic expressions for the reflection function of optically thick layers. Analytic formulas are derived which explicitly show the dependence of the retlection and transmission functions of nonabsorbing a...
متن کاملThe influence of horizontal inhomogeneity on radiative characteristics of clouds: an asymptotic case study
The paper is devoted to analytical studies of the influence of horizontal inhomogeneity of clouds on their radiative properties in the framework of the asymptotic radiative transfer theory. It is assumed that a cloud field is optically thick. Thus, only overcast cloud fields are under consideration. The study is based on the independent column approximation, assuming Gamma distribution of cloud...
متن کاملImproving the optical properties of thin film plasmonic solar cells of InP absorber layer using nanowires
In this paper, a thin-film InP-based solar cell designed and simulated. The proposed InP solar cell has a periodic array of plasmonic back-reflector, which consists of a silver layer and two silver nanowires. The indium tin oxide (ITO) layer also utilized as an anti-reflection coating (ARC) layer on top. The design creates a light-trapping structure by using a plasmonic back-reflector and an an...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of Birefringene Effect on the Light Reflection
In the present paper, the problem of light reflection from a birefringent medium and thin film is considered. First, the analytical equations governing the propagation of a plane and harmonic electromagnetic wave in an infinite, birefringent, linear, non-dispersive, non-absorbing, and non-magnetic medium is derived from Maxwell equations. Then, using phase matching condition and boundary condit...
